Red Deer Shooting Sports Association

Welcome to the Red Deer Shooting Sports Association Website.
We are looking forward to another great year of shooting activities and events in 2010!
Join us at our outdoor range and take advantage of the late summer sun to practice and socialize with other members!

Hi, everybody,

We've had no new information since our meeting last month.  Only one member sent a note asking if we were meeting today, suggesting either that we've been successful getting information out or that nobody expects much of us just now.

As I watch the large amounts of clay being taken from the hole behind the hospital, for the foundation of the new and much larger Central Alberta Cancer Centre, I wonder where Bettenson is taking it all.  Lots of the early digging was dumped onto the lot north of the hospital, the old Central Alberta Florists' site, but this past week or so it's been going somewhere else, and not to our range.

I've not heard anything from Cannons nor from Doug Wood, nor have I made contact with Doug Sawyer.  I'll do that this coming week.

I did have contact with AFSS, asking for any information or guidance they could provide.  They referred me to the RCMP, or maybe the CFC, for help.  They did have one suggestion for funding a new site, the Alberta Sports, Recreation, Parks, and Wildlife Foundation, with which we had brief contact a few years ago.  I'll also try to make contact with them, although this might not be the best year for grants.

At the Sportsman Show, where Tim and I acted as volunteer security, I talked with Rob McCoy, the long time former President of RDF&G and still their range master.  He suggested we should put an ad into all the local papers, daily, weekly, or throw away, and maybe also on some of the local electronic classified boards, to the effect that RDSSA is looking for potential sites for a new range, with some details like access, distances, amount of area needed, etc, and ask for suggestions or offers.  I think it can't hurt, but I'd like to know what you all think.  We'd need some input into the wording of any ad.

We also need some new wording on our website about our present situation with regard to new members.  Our mail had another application this week and we've had a couple of email queries weekly.

Also, any good ideas where we can leave 2011 cards for pickup by people who want them for PAL's, ATT's, etc?

Longer evenings are with us.  Manitoba won the Brier, Glenn Howard lost again, and it's time for re-loading even if we're not sure where we'll be shooting.

Any other really good ideas floating around?  Enjoy the onset of spring!

Neil

've made a list of the 2010 members who will be eligible for 2011 membership and NFA membership, according to the membership list we had for last year.

We had 91 members with PAL and an additional 20 or so who didn't have a PAL, mostly family members plus RCMP, Brinks, etc.  The Sheriffs, previously our largest group of non-PAL members, didn't join last year.

I thought we could probably skip NFA membership/insurance for the non-PAL holders and made the list accordingly.  Anybody have other thoughts?  We could bring the matter up to the membership at the meeting next Sunday evening.

RDSSA will hold a meeting next Sunday, 13 February, at 7:30pm at Badger Daylighting north of the Holiday Inn on 67th St.

We'll have membership cards for 2011 to pass to any 2010 members who care to attend.   We have a list of eligible members which may be incomplete so any 2010 members may bring their old cards to exchange for their new 2011 card.  We'll accept old keys also for recycling.

We may have further information about reclamation of our old range and possibilities for our new one.

We have some ammunition and components available for members.  Please let us know when you want to pick them up.

Some former members who didn't renew their memberships in 2010 are still on our mailing list and will get these newsletters.  We have been reluctant to remove from the list those former members who may want to maintain contact with club activities.  Any former member who wants their name removed from the mailing list please send a brief email to that effect.

Hope to see lots of you next Sunday.  Don't forget the next day will be Valentine's Day.

Your persistent, and romantic, executive
